Repartiste refers to a participant in the encomienda system, a Spanish labor system instituted in the Americas. Under this system, conquistadors were granted a specified number of Indigenous people from whom they were entitled to receive tribute and labor. In return, the conquistador was supposed to provide protection and instruct the Indigenous people in the Spanish language and in the Catholic faith. The repartiste, or encomendero, was thus a recipient of this grant.
