Reningshastighet is the rate at which contaminants are removed in a purification process. It serves as a measure of how quickly a system reduces pollutant concentrations and is used across water treatment, air purification and other separation technologies.

In wastewater treatment and similar systems, reningshastighet describes the speed of pollutant removal such as organic matter, nutrients or pathogens. For processes approximated by first-order kinetics, the concentration decline follows C(t) = C0 e^{-kt}, where k is the elimination rate constant. The mass removal rate can be expressed as R = k C V or, more commonly, R = Q (Cin - Cout). The residence time τ = V/Q provides a rough link between rate and system size.

Several factors influence reningshastighet: the intrinsic biodegradability or sorption of the pollutant, microbial activity, temperature and pH, oxygen levels, and the design and operation of the treatment unit (tank volume, mixing, contact time, membrane fouling, etc.). Higher temperatures and optimal conditions generally increase rates, while inhibitors or toxic compounds reduce them.

In practice the term is used to compare purification performance under given operating conditions and to guide design and optimization. Measured rates are often reported as mg/L per hour or as a percentage removal per unit time, and can be affected by measurement method and time horizon.
