Renhållningssystemet refers to the waste management system in Sweden. It encompasses the collection, transportation, treatment, and disposal of waste generated by households and businesses. The primary goal is to ensure public health, environmental protection, and resource recovery.

The system is largely decentralized, with municipalities responsible for organizing and managing waste services within their boundaries. This includes providing bins for different types of waste, operating collection routes, and establishing local sorting facilities. There is a strong emphasis on waste segregation at the source, encouraging citizens to separate recyclable materials like paper, plastic, glass, and metal, as well as organic waste for composting or biogas production.

Non-recyclable residual waste is typically sent to waste-to-energy plants, where it is incinerated to generate electricity and heat. This process significantly reduces the volume of waste requiring landfill disposal and contributes to the energy supply. Landfilling is generally considered a last resort and is subject to strict regulations to prevent environmental contamination.

Extended producer responsibility (EPR) is another key component, meaning that producers are responsible for the end-of-life management of their products. This applies to various items, including packaging, electronics, batteries, and vehicles. These EPR systems often involve producer-funded collection and recycling schemes.
