Rengastus is an Estonian term meaning excitation or stimulation. In scientific and technical discourse it denotes the process of imparting energy to a system, raising it to a higher energy state, or triggering activity.

In physics and chemistry, an excitation occurs when a particle absorbs energy—such as a photon, heat, or kinetic energy—lifting electrons to higher energy levels, molecules to excited vibrational states, or promoting charge carriers in a solid to the conduction band.
