In Hungarian law the term refers to decrees issued by the government (kormányrendeletek) and by ministries (miniszteri rendeletek), though the concept exists in many legal systems under different names. Rendeleteket derive their authority from the constitution or enabling statutes and are used to fill in technical details that laws leave to regulatory rules.

Rendeletek are generally subordinate to statutes and the constitution. They may specify administrative procedures, regulate how agencies operate, set budgetary or financial rules, and implement policy within the scope defined by law. They can be temporary or long‑lasting and are often updated or repealed by subsequent decrees. Because they do not undergo the full legislative process, they are typically designed to be more flexible and easier to adjust than primary legislation.

Decrees are usually published in an official gazette and take effect on a specified date, often subject to conditions such as publication or entry into force at a particular time.
