Remittances funds are a vital source of foreign currency for many developing countries, with billions of dollars being transferred annually. In some countries, remittances account for a significant portion of the gross domestic product (GDP). For example, in Mexico, remittances are estimated to be around 25% of the GDP. The money is often sent through formal financial institutions, such as banks and money transfer operators, but also through informal channels, like cash-based transfer systems and mobile money.

To reduce costs and increase efficiency in remittances transfer, several initiatives have been implemented worldwide. These include international agreements, like the Remittances Plus Initiative, and technological innovations, like peer-to-peer platforms and digital wallets. Despite efforts to modernize the industry, remittances transfers remain expensive, with fees often reaching up to 10% of the transaction value. According to the World Bank, 53% of migrant workers use online money transfer services, which is more than the number of users of traditional cash-based systems.

In addition to financial institutions and governments, several Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and multilateral agencies, such as the World Bank and the International Fund for Agricultural Development, also play a significant role in developing the capacity of remittances systems in developing countries. Their efforts aim to harness the power of remittances for economic growth and poverty reduction.
