reliikkiin
Reliikkiin refers to a traditional Finnish folk custom and ritual associated with the celebration of Christmas Eve, known in Finnish as *Jouluaatto*. The term originates from the word *reliikki*, meaning "relic" or "sacred object," reflecting the religious and spiritual significance of the event. Historically, reliikkiin involved a communal gathering where families and neighbors shared stories, songs, and food, often centered around the nativity scene (*joulupukki*, the Finnish Santa Claus, was not yet widely associated with this tradition). The evening was marked by a sense of anticipation and reverence, as it was believed to be a time when the boundary between the physical and spiritual worlds grew thin.
The practice of reliikkiin was deeply rooted in the Lutheran traditions introduced to Finland during the Reformation.
Today, reliikkiin is often remembered as a quieter, more introspective counterpart to the lively Christmas festivities
