Reliabiliteet, or reliability, is the degree to which a system, component, or measurement performs its intended function under stated conditions for a specified period and with acceptable consistency. In engineering and product design, it is commonly defined as the probability that a system will operate without failure for a given time frame. Key metrics include mean time between failures (MTBF), failure rate, and the reliability function R(t), which represents the probability that the item will survive beyond time t.

In statistics and psychometrics, reliability refers to the consistency and stability of a measurement. A reliable instrument yields similar results under consistent conditions, but reliability does not by itself prove that the instrument measures what it is intended to measure (validity). Techniques such as redundancy, fault tolerance, robust design, and reliability-centered maintenance are used to improve system dependability. In measurement science, reliability is estimated from data on repeated measurements or observations and is essential for interpreting results and comparing instruments.
