Regressionsrisk is a term used in statistics and predictive analytics to denote the risk that the performance or reliability of a regression-based model declines after deployment. While not universally standardized, it refers to the tendency of a model trained on historical data to produce less accurate or less well-calibrated predictions when confronted with newer data, shifting relationships, or changing target populations.

Common causes include data drift, where feature distributions change; concept drift, where the underlying relationship between inputs and the target evolves; changes in data collection or labeling procedures; and model misspecification or insufficient retraining. Feedback loops, such as automated decisions influencing future data, can also amplify regressionsrisk. External events, seasonality, or economic shifts may contribute as well.

Regressionsrisk is typically assessed through ongoing monitoring of out-of-sample or recent-data performance. Key indicators include increases in error metrics such as RMSE or MAE, declines in R-squared, deteriorating calibration curves, and rising misclassification rates in probabilistic predictions. Drift-detection methods and time-based cross-validation help distinguish real drift from random variation.

Mitigation involves regular model maintenance and retraining on up-to-date data, updating features or model structure, and adopting robust or ensembled approaches. Establishing governance, defining drift thresholds, and implementing automated alerts support timely responses. In some cases, simpler or more flexible models reduce sensitivity to changing conditions, lowering regressionsrisk over the long term.
