Refunctionalization is a concept used in various fields, including linguistics, sociology, and engineering, to describe the process by which something acquires a new function or purpose, often different from its original design or intended use.

In linguistics, refunctionalization refers to the process where a word or phrase, originally used to express one grammatical function, comes to express another. For example, a noun might be repurposed as a verb, or an adjective might begin to function as an adverb. This often happens through a gradual shift in usage within a language.

In sociology, refunctionalization can describe how social institutions or practices adapt and take on new roles to meet changing societal needs. A classic example is the family unit, which has evolved from primarily an economic production unit to a unit focused more on emotional support and child-rearing.

In engineering and design, refunctionalization involves modifying an existing object or system to perform a new task or serve a different purpose. This can be seen in upcycling, where discarded materials are transformed into products of higher value or quality, or in the retrofitting of old buildings for new uses. The core idea across these disciplines is transformation and adaptation, where the "what it is" becomes less important than "what it can do" in a new context.
