Refrigerative refers to a process or device that produces cooling. This is typically achieved by removing heat from a space or substance. Refrigerative systems are widely used in everyday life, from household refrigerators and air conditioners to industrial processes requiring low temperatures.

The core principle behind most refrigerative systems is the vapor-compression cycle. This cycle involves a refrigerant, a working fluid that changes state between liquid and gas. The refrigerant absorbs heat from the area to be cooled as it evaporates, then is compressed into a high-pressure gas. This gas then releases heat to the surroundings as it condenses back into a liquid, before repeating the cycle.
