Refrigerantbasert refers to systems or technologies that utilize refrigerants to achieve cooling. Refrigerants are chemical substances with specific thermodynamic properties that allow them to absorb heat from a space or substance and then release it elsewhere. This process is the fundamental principle behind most modern refrigeration and air conditioning systems.

Common refrigerants include hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), and more recently, natural refrigerants like ammonia, carbon dioxide, and hydrocarbons. The choice of refrigerant depends on factors such as the application, desired temperature range, efficiency requirements, and environmental regulations. Older refrigerants like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and HCFCs have been phased out due to their ozone-depleting potential and high global warming potential.

Refrigerantbasert systems typically consist of a compressor, condenser, expansion valve, and evaporator. The refrigerant circulates through these components, undergoing phase changes from liquid to gas and back again. In the evaporator, the liquid refrigerant absorbs heat, turning into a gas. This cooled gas then moves to the compressor, where its pressure and temperature increase. The hot, high-pressure gas then flows to the condenser, where it releases heat to the surroundings and condenses back into a liquid. Finally, the expansion valve reduces the pressure of the liquid refrigerant before it re-enters the evaporator, completing the cycle. These systems are widely used in domestic refrigerators, air conditioners, industrial cooling processes, and commercial refrigeration units.
