Reflexvizsgálatokat, or reflex testing, is a crucial part of a neurological examination used to assess the integrity of the nervous system. These tests evaluate both superficial and deep reflexes, which are involuntary muscle contractions triggered by specific stimuli.

Deep tendon reflexes, commonly known as stretch reflexes, are elicited by tapping a tendon with a reflex hammer. This action stretches the muscle, stimulating sensory receptors that send signals to the spinal cord. The spinal cord then sends a motor command back to the same muscle, causing it to contract. Common examples include the patellar reflex (knee-jerk) and the Achilles reflex. The speed and amplitude of the reflex response are observed.

Superficial reflexes involve stimulating the skin or mucous membranes. Examples include the plantar reflex (Babinski sign) and abdominal reflexes. These reflexes are also mediated by the spinal cord.

Abnormalities in reflex responses can indicate various neurological conditions. Absent or diminished reflexes might suggest peripheral nerve damage, nerve root compression, or certain spinal cord lesions. Exaggerated or hyperactive reflexes, such as clonus (rhythmic contractions), can point to upper motor neuron damage, like that seen in stroke or spinal cord injury. The Babinski sign, where the big toe extends upwards when the sole of the foot is stroked, is normal in infants but abnormal in adults, indicating damage to the corticospinal tract.

Reflex testing is a quick, non-invasive, and valuable tool for neurologists and other healthcare professionals to gain insight into the functioning of a patient's nervous system. It helps localize potential neurological deficits and guide further diagnostic investigations.
