Reflekslar, also known as reflexes, are involuntary and nearly instantaneous movements in response to a stimulus. They are an automatic response of the nervous system, bypassing conscious thought. This rapid reaction is crucial for protecting the body from harm. For instance, the withdrawal reflex causes you to quickly pull your hand away from a hot object before you even feel the pain.

Reflexes are mediated by a neural pathway called a reflex arc. This arc typically involves a sensory receptor that detects the stimulus, a sensory neuron that transmits the signal to the spinal cord or brainstem, an interneuron (in some cases) that processes the signal, a motor neuron that carries the command away from the central nervous system, and an effector (usually a muscle or gland) that produces the response. The simpler reflexes, like the patellar reflex (knee-jerk reflex), may involve only two neurons: a sensory neuron directly synapsing with a motor neuron.

There are various types of reflexes, classified based on their origin, complexity, or the effector involved. Somatic reflexes involve skeletal muscles and are often voluntary in nature, though the initial response is involuntary (e.g., blinking when something approaches your eye). Autonomic reflexes involve smooth muscles, cardiac muscles, or glands and control involuntary bodily functions such as digestion, heart rate, and blood pressure. Congenital reflexes are present at birth, while acquired reflexes are learned through experience and repetition, like a dog salivating at the sound of a bell. Reflexes are fundamental to survival, offering a quick defense against injury and maintaining homeostasis within the body.
