Referenssifaasia, also known as reference aphasia, is a rare subtype of aphasia characterized by significant difficulties in understanding and producing language that is considered abstract or relational. Individuals with referenssifaasia struggle with words that do not refer to concrete objects or actions, but rather to concepts like time, space, logic, and social relationships. This often manifests as trouble comprehending or using words such as "before," "after," "under," "over," "because," "if," "then," "same," "different," and "all."

The primary deficit in referenssifaasia lies in processing information that requires a deeper level of semantic understanding and the ability to manipulate abstract concepts. While individuals may still be able to identify and name concrete objects, their ability to understand the relationships between them, or to engage in complex reasoning through language, is severely impaired.
