Reepithelialized describes a tissue state in which the epidermal layer has regenerated to cover a wound bed, restoring a continuous epithelial surface. The term is the past participle form of reepithelialize, commonly used in wound healing literature and pathology reports.

The process of reepithelialization involves keratinocyte migration from the edges of a wound and from residual epithelial structures within the wound bed, followed by proliferation and differentiation to reform stratified epithelium. A intact basement membrane, adequate moisture, and a favorable inflammatory milieu support efficient reepithelialization. Restoration of barrier function, including tight junctions and desmosomes, is a key outcome of the process.

Reepithelialization occurs during the proliferative phase of wound healing, typically after an inflammatory response has cleared debris and pathogens. It can proceed concurrently with dermal remodeling and new extracellular matrix deposition. The pace of reepithelialization is influenced by wound size and depth, tissue type (skin, mucosa, cornea), and conditions such as infection, ischemia, or necrotic tissue, as well as systemic factors like age, diabetes, smoking, and nutritional status or medications that affect cell migration and proliferation.

Clinical relevance hinges on reepithelialization as a major determinant of wound closure and barrier restoration. Inadequate or delayed reepithelialization can contribute to chronic wounds, infection risk, scarring, or contractures. The term “reepithelialized” is therefore used to describe wounds that have achieved epithelial coverage and are progressing toward complete healing.
