Reduktionstryck refers to the partial pressure of a reducing agent in a gas mixture and is used as a key parameter in metallurgical and chemical engineering processes. It represents the portion of the total gas pressure carried by substances such as hydrogen or carbon monoxide that can drive reduction reactions. The concept helps describe and control how readily an oxidized species, for example a metal oxide, is reduced at a given temperature.

In high-temperature environments, the extent and rate of reduction depend on the reducing gas partial pressure relative to the oxide’s equilibrium partial pressure at that temperature. If the actual reduction pressure is high enough, reduction proceeds; if it is too low, the oxide remains largely unreduced. Thus, reduction pressure is used to design process atmospheres, compare different gas mixtures, and optimize product quality and energy efficiency.

Measurement and control are achieved by adjusting the gas composition and flow within a furnace or reactor. Reduction pressure is typically expressed in pascals, kilopascals, or bars and is distinguished from the total pressure of the system. Gas analyzers and flow controllers are commonly employed to maintain the desired reducing atmosphere.

Applications of the concept include direct reduced iron production, chemical vapor deposition, ceramic and oxide sintering, and other processes where a reducing atmosphere is necessary to obtain metal or oxide products with specific properties. The choice of reducing agent (for example hydrogen or carbon monoxide) and its targeted partial pressure are determined by thermodynamics, temperature, and material stability considerations.
