A redoxswitch is a molecule or molecular system that can reversibly switch between two or more redox states in response to redox stimuli, typically altering electronic, optical, or binding properties. Such switches can be organic, inorganic, or organometallic and are studied for their potential in molecular electronics, sensing, and smart materials.

The mechanism relies on controlled oxidation or reduction, which changes the molecule's charge, spin, geometry, and frontier molecular orbitals. Common motifs include ferrocene/ferrocenium, viologens, and metal-ligand complexes; switching can be accompanied by color changes, luminescence shifts, or altered binding affinity.

Representative examples include ferrocene-based switches that toggle between Fe(II) and Fe(III) states; viologen systems that cycle between dication and radical cation forms; and ruthenium or osmium polypyridyl complexes that exhibit redox-induced changes in color or emission.

Applications span molecular electronics, as nanoscale switches or memory elements; electrochromic displays; chemical and biological sensing; catalysis where redox state controls activity; and redox-triggered drug delivery or release in responsive materials.

Key design considerations include achieving fast and reversible switching with minimal degradation (fatigue), tuning redox potentials to operate under practical conditions, ensuring stability of both states in the chosen medium, and ensuring a clear link between redox state and the targeted property (color, conductivity, or binding).
