Redoxförsvaret, often translated as redox defense or redox protection, refers to the biological mechanisms that protect cells from damage caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) and other reactive nitrogen species (RNS). These reactive molecules are byproducts of normal metabolic processes, such as cellular respiration, but can also be generated in response to environmental stressors like radiation or inflammation. When ROS and RNS accumulate to excessive levels, they can oxidize crucial cellular components like DNA, proteins, and lipids, leading to oxidative stress and cellular dysfunction.

The redox defense system is a complex network involving various enzymes, antioxidants, and signaling pathways. Key enzymatic players include superoxide dismutase (SOD), which converts superoxide radicals into hydrogen peroxide, and catalase and glutathione peroxidase, which break down hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen.
