Reders is a plural form of the Dutch and Scandinavian term reder, used to denote shipowners or the operators of merchant vessels. In historical and contemporary contexts reders have been central figures in maritime trade, responsible for financing, registering, maintaining and crewing ships, and for arranging cargoes through chartering or liner services. The term appears frequently in legal, commercial and historical documents in the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and other maritime regions with Germanic languages.

Historically, reders could be individual owners, family firms or members of merchant guilds; they played prominent roles in the expansion of European trade from the late Middle Ages through the age of sail. In modern shipping, many reders operate through corporate structures that separate commercial ownership from technical management, insurance and financing. Their activities intersect with ship registries (flag states), classification societies, maritime law and international regulations on safety, labor and the environment.

The word is also encountered as a surname and in organizational names (for example, redersverenigingen, or shipowners’ associations). As shipping has globalized, the traditional image of the reder as an independent owner has evolved into a range of business models, from large multinational shipping companies to small niche operators, all subject to increasingly complex regulatory and economic pressures.
