Rebound tukkoisuuteen refers to the phenomenon where nasal congestion returns or worsens after a period of relief, often experienced by individuals using nasal decongestant sprays. This effect is primarily associated with the overuse of topical vasoconstrictive nasal sprays, such as those containing oxymetazoline or xylometazoline. When these sprays are used for more than a few consecutive days, the nasal tissues can become dependent on the medication to keep blood vessels constricted. Upon the spray's effects wearing off, the blood vessels dilate, leading to a rebound swelling and congestion that can feel more severe than the original symptoms. This creates a cycle where the individual feels compelled to use the spray more frequently to alleviate the discomfort, further exacerbating the problem.
