In a typical reaktiokierre, a primary catalyst facilitates the conversion of feedstock into an intermediate product. This intermediate then enters a second reactor stage, often with a different catalyst or operating condition, where it is transformed into the final product. The by‑product of the second stage is either recycled back into the first reactor or recovered as a useful material. Because the system operates at steady state, the overall mass balance can be maintained with minimal feedstock and utilities.
