Rakuväliseid are an annual plant, meaning they complete their life cycle within a year. They germinate in early spring, grow and mature over the summer months, and then produce seeds before dying off in the autumn. The seeds are dispersed by the wind, often traveling distances of up to 1 meter before coming to rest.

The species is often referred to as "rakuväliseid" in Estonian, which translates to "field maize" or "field corn". However, the plant is not a type of corn or maize and is not related to those species. Instead, it is a member of the poppy family and is often found growing alongside other wildflowers in fields and meadows.
