A rakettimoottorisuutin, commonly known in English as a rocket engine nozzle, is a crucial component of a rocket engine. Its primary function is to accelerate the hot exhaust gases produced by the combustion chamber to supersonic speeds. This acceleration generates thrust, which propels the rocket.

The typical shape of a rocket engine nozzle is a de Laval nozzle, which consists of a converging section followed by a diverging section. In the converging section, the hot gases from the combustion chamber are compressed and their velocity increases as they approach the narrowest point, known as the throat. At the throat, the flow reaches sonic velocity.

Beyond the throat, the diverging section of the nozzle allows the gases to expand. As the gases expand, their pressure and temperature decrease, while their velocity increases dramatically, reaching supersonic speeds. This expansion process is what converts the thermal energy of the exhaust gases into kinetic energy, thereby maximizing thrust. The shape and dimensions of the nozzle are carefully designed based on the specific propellant and combustion chamber conditions to achieve optimal performance.

The material used for a rocket engine nozzle must be able to withstand extremely high temperatures and pressures. Common materials include refractory metals like tungsten and molybdenum, as well as high-temperature alloys and ceramics. Cooling systems are often incorporated to prevent the nozzle from overheating.
