A rainspout, also commonly known as a downspout or leader, is a pipe or channel that directs rainwater from a roof gutter to the ground or an underground drainage system. Its primary function is to prevent water from cascading off the roof edge, which could cause erosion of the foundation, damage to landscaping, or water infiltration into the building's walls and basement.

Rainspouts are typically made from materials such as aluminum, vinyl, galvanized steel, or copper. They are installed vertically along the exterior of a building, connecting to the horizontal gutter system that encircles the roofline. The size and number of rainspouts required depend on the roof's surface area, the expected rainfall in the region, and local building codes.

Proper functioning of rainspouts is crucial for maintaining the structural integrity and aesthetic appeal of a building. Clogged rainspouts, often due to leaves, debris, or ice, can lead to water backup and overflow, negating their protective benefits. Regular cleaning and maintenance are therefore recommended. Some systems incorporate extensions or splash blocks at the base of the rainspout to further disperse water away from the building's foundation. In some cases, rainspouts may also be connected to underground drainpipes to carry water further away from the property.
