The creation of credit by commercial banks and, later, central banks' role in managing liquidity and price stability have shaped modern monetary economies. In economic theory, the monetary sector interacts with the real economy through finance and demand, influencing business cycles and financial stability.

In contemporary Finland, rahataloudesta, or the monetary economy, operates within the euro area, with monetary policy set by the European Central Bank and the Bank of Finland acting as the national central bank and payment-system supervisor. Ongoing challenges include controlling inflation, ensuring financial stability, and managing debt levels, while balancing growth and distributional effects through regulation and macroprudential tools.
