Radioyhteydet, or radio communications, refer to the transmission and reception of information using radio waves. These waves are a form of electromagnetic radiation that travel through space at the speed of light. Radio waves are generated by an oscillating electric current in a transmitter antenna and are detected by a receiver antenna.

The fundamental principle behind radio communication involves modulating a carrier wave with the information signal. Modulation can take various forms, such as amplitude modulation (AM) or frequency modulation (FM), where the amplitude or frequency of the carrier wave, respectively, is altered in accordance with the information. The modulated signal is then amplified and broadcast. At the receiving end, the antenna captures the radio waves, and a tuned circuit selects the desired frequency. The receiver then demodulates the signal, extracting the original information.

Radio waves can propagate through different mechanisms, depending on their frequency. Lower frequencies can diffract around obstacles and follow the curvature of the Earth (ground wave), while higher frequencies tend to travel in straight lines and can be reflected by the ionosphere (sky wave). Line-of-sight propagation is common for very high frequencies and microwaves.

Applications of radio communication are vast and diverse, encompassing broadcasting (radio and television), mobile telephony, satellite communication, radar, amateur radio, and wireless networking. The spectrum of radio frequencies is a limited resource, and its allocation and management are crucial for efficient and interference-free communication. International bodies like the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) are responsible for coordinating frequency usage globally.
