Radiovastaanottimet, often referred to as radios, are electronic devices designed to capture radio waves and convert them into audible sound or other usable information. The fundamental principle behind a radio receiver involves an antenna that intercepts electromagnetic radiation in the radio frequency spectrum. This captured energy is then processed through a series of electronic components.

A key stage in radio reception is tuning, which allows the user to select a specific frequency or broadcast station from the multitude of signals present. This is typically achieved using a resonant circuit, often a capacitor and an inductor, that is adjusted to resonate at the desired frequency. Once tuned, the signal is amplified to increase its strength.

The modulated radio signal, which carries the information (audio, data, etc.), needs to be demodulated. This process separates the original information from the carrier wave. Different modulation techniques, such as Amplitude Modulation (AM) and Frequency Modulation (FM), require corresponding demodulation methods. After demodulation, the signal is usually amplified again before being sent to a loudspeaker or other output device. Early radios were often crystal sets, which required no external power, while modern receivers are typically solid-state electronic devices powered by electricity.
