A radiometrist is a professional who specializes in the preparation, measurement, and administration of radiopharmaceuticals used in diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine. They work within medical imaging departments and radiopharmacy, ensuring that radioactive materials are handled safely, dosed accurately, and administered correctly to patients.

Duties include calculating patient-specific radiopharmaceutical doses, performing quality control and calibration of dose measurement instruments, preparing radiopharmaceuticals under aseptic conditions, and coordinating with physicians to schedule imaging or therapy procedures. They also participate in image acquisition support, assist with patient positioning and monitoring, and maintain documentation for regulatory and clinical records. Safety considerations, such as radiation protection, contamination control, and waste handling, are central to the role.

Education and certification: In many countries, radiometrist work overlaps with nuclear medicine technologists or radiologic technologists. Preparation for the role typically requires an accredited program in nuclear medicine technology, radiologic technology, or a related field, often yielding an associate or bachelor’s degree. Certification is commonly obtained from national boards (for example, in the United States the ARRT or NMTCB) and may be required for licensure, with ongoing continuing education.

Work environment: Radiometrists are employed in hospitals, diagnostic imaging centers, and research laboratories. They may be stationed in radiopharmacy facilities for tracer production and quality control or in nuclear medicine imaging suites.
