Radiativo is an adjective used to describe phenomena related to radiation, the emission or propagation of energy as electromagnetic waves or particles. In science, the term is applied across physics, chemistry, astronomy, and engineering to denote processes that involve the generation, absorption, transmission, or scattering of photons. It is the Romance-language cognate of the English term radiative and derives from Latin radius, “ray.”

Radiative transfer concerns how radiation propagates through matter. It is described by the radiative transfer equation, which tracks changes in the specific intensity along a path due to emission, absorption, and scattering. Solving the equation requires material properties such as the emissivity, absorption coefficient, and scattering phase function. Radiative transfer is central to atmospheric science, stellar atmospheres, and remote sensing.

Radiative heat transfer refers to the transfer of thermal energy by electromagnetic radiation, which can occur even in vacuum. It depends on the surfaces’ emissivity and their temperature difference. In the idealized limit of a blackbody, the emitted power is proportional to the fourth power of temperature (Stefan–Boltzmann law). Real bodies emit less, described by emissivity values between 0 and 1. Geometry, view factors, and spectral properties influence radiative exchange between bodies and between a planetary surface and space.

In chemistry and atomic physics, radiative processes include spontaneous emission, radiative recombination, and fluorescence. Transitions between energy levels emit photons with energies equal to the level differences. Einstein A and B coefficients quantify transition probabilities, and radiative properties underpin spectroscopy, line shapes, and Planck’s distribution for thermal radiation.

Applications of radiativo concepts appear in climatology, where radiative forcing measures climate impact, and in astronomy, where radiative transfer models help interpret spectra from celestial objects.
