Radiaation is not a standard term in physics and is commonly a misspelling of radiation. When discussed in this way, it refers to the same range of phenomena described by radiation: the emission, transmission, and interaction of energy with matter through space or a medium.

Radiation is typically divided into two broad categories. Electromagnetic radiation consists of photons and includes radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays, and gamma rays. Particulate radiation consists of particles such as alpha particles, beta particles, neutrons, and other nuclear fragments. Radiation can be ionizing or non-ionizing depending on energy; ionizing radiation has enough energy to remove electrons from atoms and can affect biological tissue, while non-ionizing radiation lacks sufficient energy for ionization and is generally associated with heating or other non-ionizing interactions.

Sources of radiation are natural and artificial. Natural sources include cosmic rays, terrestrial radionuclides, and sunlight. Artificial sources include nuclear reactors, medical X-ray devices, industrial radiography, and certain consumer technologies. Radiation interacts with matter through absorption, scattering, and ionization, leading to effects such as heating or chemical changes at sufficient doses.

Measurements and safety are central to radiation work. Common units include the gray (Gy) for absorbed dose, the sievert (Sv) for effective dose, and the becquerel (Bq) for activity. Protection practices emphasize shielding, distance, and limiting exposure time, guided by the ALARA principle (as low as reasonably achievable).
