Quasimonastic is an adjective used to describe persons, communities, or practices that resemble monastic life but do not fulfill the formal criteria of a monastic order in the canonical sense. Etymology: from Latin quasi "almost" + monasticus "monastic".

In scholarly usage, quasi-monastic refers to groups or individuals who live under rules inspired by monastic discipline—such as vows of chastity or celibacy, poverty, and obedience; regular communal prayer, contemplation, and ascetic practices; and a stable or dedicated residential setting—without being part of an officially recognized monastery or taking full monastic vows. The status is usually informal, temporary, or hybrid, with varying degrees of clerical oversight.

Contexts: In medieval and early modern Europe, certain lay religious movements that embraced communal living and spiritual commitments without joining formal orders have been described as quasi-monastic (e.g., Beghines, Beguines). In modern times, secular institutes and lay communities that follow fixed rules while remaining outside traditional monastic profession can be characterized as quasi-monastic in descriptive writing.
