Püsikiirushoidja, often referred to by its English translation "cruise control," is a system that automatically maintains a vehicle's speed set by the driver. The driver activates the system and selects a desired speed. Once engaged, the püsikiirushoidja will attempt to keep the vehicle at that speed, regardless of minor changes in road gradient, by controlling the engine's throttle. If the driver brakes or the system is deactivated, the püsikiirushoidja disengages.

Modern püsikiirushoidja systems can range from basic speed-holding functions to more advanced adaptive cruise control. Adaptive cruise control (ACC) systems utilize sensors, such as radar or cameras, to detect vehicles ahead. If the system detects a slower-moving vehicle, it will automatically reduce the car's speed to maintain a pre-set following distance. Once the obstruction is cleared, the ACC system will then accelerate the vehicle back to the original set speed. Some ACC systems can even bring the vehicle to a complete stop and then resume driving in stop-and-go traffic.

The primary benefit of püsikiirushoidja is driver comfort, particularly on long journeys, as it reduces the need for constant manual throttle control. It can also contribute to fuel efficiency by maintaining a more consistent speed. However, drivers are still required to remain attentive and ready to take control at all times, as the system has limitations and may not react to all situations. Püsikiirushoidja is a driver assistance system and not a substitute for active driving.
