Põlvet is a small settlement located in Pärnu County in southwestern Estonia. Administratively it falls within the boundaries of Lääneranna Parish. The village lies at the eastern edge of the Väike-Ehmeta National Landscape Reserve, near the coast of the Gulf of Riga. Its terrain is characterized by typical Estonian lowland features, including mixed pine forests and seasonal wetlands.

The earliest written records mentioning Põlvet date back to the 14th century when the area was part of the Livonian Order’s holdings. Over the centuries the settlement remained a modest agrarian community, with residents traditionally engaged in subsistence farming and small-scale logging. In the 19th century, a modest primary school was established, serving children from Põlvet and neighboring hamlets. The school was closed in the late 20th century following demographic decline and consolidation of educational facilities in larger nearby villages.

According to the most recent national census, the population of Põlvet is around 40 residents, with a demographic structure skewed towards older age groups. The decline in population reflects broader rural depopulation trends in Estonia, driven largely by migration to urban centers. The local economy is primarily based on agriculture, forestry, and increasingly, eco-tourism, given the village’s proximity to protected natural areas.

Põlvet is not widely known for any major cultural or historical landmarks, but the surrounding landscape is frequently used for traditional Estonian summer–tea gatherings (vereaeg), and for seasonal fishing in the nearby tidal flats. The village is also part of the network of rural routes that are promoted for cycling and walking tourism, providing access to the coastal nature reserves and historic coastline.

Notable individuals from Põlvet include the late marine biologist Juhan Mäl, who conducted pioneering studies on the Gulf of Riga shorelines from 1973 to 1995. While Põlvet’s size is small, the settlement exemplifies the characteristic features of rural communities in southwestern Estonia, with its reliance on natural resources and its role within the broader region’s ecological and cultural landscape.
