The process of inflammation involves a sequence of events beginning with the detection of these harmful stimuli.

These initial triggers, or põletikualgatusi, can be diverse. Pathogens like bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites represent a common category. Cell damage from physical trauma, such as burns or cuts, or chemical insults, like toxins or irritants, also initiates inflammation. Furthermore, the body's own malfunctioning immune system can lead to autoimmune diseases where inflammation is directed against healthy tissues. Allergens, which are typically harmless substances, can also provoke an inflammatory response in sensitized individuals.

Upon encountering these triggers, specialized cells within the body, such as macrophages and dendritic cells, recognize molecular patterns associated with danger. This recognition sets off a cascade of molecular signals, including cytokines and chemokines. These signaling molecules recruit other immune cells to the site of injury or infection and increase blood flow to the area, leading to the characteristic signs of inflammation: redness, heat, swelling, pain, and loss of function.
