The term is formed from the adjective përgjithës(i) meaning general or overall, with the adverbial suffix -isht. It is invariable, meaning it does not change for gender or number, and it can be used with verbs, adjectives, or entire clauses to signal a general scope. In addition to single-word usage, Albanian also employs the two-word phrase në përgjithësi to express a similar idea, often in slightly different stylistic contexts.
