Päätöslauseesta, or decidability in logic and computer science, refers to the property of a formal system or a problem that allows for a mechanical procedure to determine whether any given statement within that system is true or false, or whether a problem instance has a solution or not. This procedure, often called an algorithm, must always terminate and produce a definitive yes or no answer.

The concept of decidability is fundamental to theoretical computer science and mathematical logic. A problem is considered decidable if there exists an algorithm that can solve it for all possible inputs in a finite amount of time. Conversely, an undecidable problem is one for which no such algorithm exists.

A classic example of an undecidable problem is the Halting Problem, which asks whether it is possible to determine, for an arbitrary program and an arbitrary input, whether the program will eventually halt or run forever. Alan Turing's work in the 1930s proved that the Halting Problem is undecidable, meaning no general algorithm can solve it.

The field of computability theory extensively studies decidability and undecidability. It establishes the limits of what can be computed by mechanical processes. Understanding decidability is crucial for designing algorithms, analyzing the complexity of problems, and exploring the foundations of mathematics and computation. If a problem is decidable, it implies that it can be solved algorithmically. If it is undecidable, then no algorithm can ever provide a universal solution.
