For a battery, the terminal voltage is the EMF minus the voltage drop due to its internal resistance. This means that as a battery discharges and its internal resistance increases, or as the current drawn from it increases, the terminal voltage decreases. Similarly, for a motor, the terminal voltage is the applied voltage minus the voltage drop across its internal winding resistance and counter-electromotive force (CEMF) generated by its rotation.
