Pääsulakkeet, often translated as main fuses or service fuses, are a critical component of an electrical installation's protection system. They are typically located at the point where the main electricity supply enters a building or property, before the power is distributed to the rest of the circuits. Their primary function is to protect the entire electrical system from overcurrents, which can be caused by short circuits or excessive loads.

When an overcurrent occurs, the conducting element within the fuse heats up and melts, breaking the circuit and interrupting the flow of electricity. This prevents damage to wiring, appliances, and other electrical components, and importantly, significantly reduces the risk of fire. Pääsulakkeet are usually designed to be replaced after they have blown, signifying that a fault condition has occurred.

The rating of the pääsulakkeet is determined by the total expected electrical load of the property. It is essential that these fuses are correctly sized to protect the installation without unnecessarily tripping during normal operation. Incorrectly sized fuses, whether too large or too small, can compromise safety. In many modern installations, these main fuses have been replaced or supplemented by main circuit breakers, which offer similar protection but can be reset rather than replaced.
