Puuvillast is the Estonian word for cotton. Cotton is a soft, fluffy staple fiber that grows in a boll, or protective case, around the seeds of the cotton plants of the genus Gossypium in the mallow family Malvaceae. The fiber is almost pure cellulose, with minor amounts of waxes, fats, pectins, and other organic and inorganic substances. Under optimal conditions, the cotton plant produces bolls that, when mature, burst open to reveal the fluffy white fiber. This fiber is then harvested, either by hand or by machine.
