Puuvillast

Puuvillast is the Estonian word for cotton. Cotton is a soft, fluffy staple fiber that grows in a boll, or protective case, around the seeds of the cotton plants of the genus Gossypium in the mallow family Malvaceae. The fiber is almost pure cellulose, with minor amounts of waxes, fats, pectins, and other organic and inorganic substances. Under optimal conditions, the cotton plant produces bolls that, when mature, burst open to reveal the fluffy white fiber. This fiber is then harvested, either by hand or by machine.

The history of cotton cultivation and use dates back thousands of years. Archaeological evidence suggests that cotton was used in the Indus Valley Civilization as early as 5000 BCE. The ancient Egyptians also cultivated and used cotton, and it was known to the ancient Greeks and Romans. Cotton production and trade expanded significantly with the development of new technologies, particularly during the Industrial Revolution in Britain, where cotton mills played a pivotal role.

Today, cotton is one of the most important natural fibers used globally. It is a primary component of many textiles, including clothing, bedding, towels, and upholstery. Its natural properties, such as its softness, absorbency, breathability, and durability, make it a popular choice for a wide range of applications. Cotton is also used in the production of paper, bandages, and various industrial products. Major cotton-producing countries include India, China, the United States, and Brazil. The cultivation of cotton is an important agricultural activity in many parts of the world, providing livelihoods for millions of people.
