Puupellettejä, often referred to as wood pellets, are a biofuel made from compressed organic matter or biomass. They are typically produced from sawdust, wood shavings, and other wood waste generated from lumber mills, furniture factories, and other wood processing industries. The raw material is dried, ground into a fine powder, and then compressed under high pressure and temperature without the use of artificial binders. This compression process causes the natural lignin in the wood to act as a binder, holding the pellets together.

The resulting pellets are uniform in size and shape, usually cylindrical, with a diameter of about 6-8 millimeters and a length of 10-30 millimeters. This standardized form makes them ideal for automated handling and combustion in specialized stoves and boilers. Their high energy density and low moisture content contribute to efficient burning, producing a consistent heat output.

Puupellettejä are considered a renewable energy source because the wood used in their production can be replenished through sustainable forestry practices. The combustion process releases carbon dioxide, but it is generally considered carbon-neutral as the amount released is equivalent to the amount absorbed by the trees during their growth. This makes them an environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuels for heating purposes. They are widely used in residential heating, commercial buildings, and even in some industrial applications for power generation.
