Puolijohdekomponentti (semiconductor component) is an electronic component that relies on semiconductor materials to regulate the flow of electrical current. Silicon dominates due to its abundance, well-understood properties, and protective native oxide, while other materials such as germanium, gallium arsenide, silicon carbide, and gallium nitride are used for specialized high-speed or high-power applications.

Common categories include diodes, which allow current to pass in one direction; transistors, which act as switches or amplifiers (bipolar junction transistors and field-effect transistors, including MOSFETs); and more complex devices such as thyristors and integrated circuits that combine many components on a single chip.

Operation depends on doping to create p-type and n-type regions, forming PN junctions or Schottky contacts. By varying geometry, material, and operating conditions, these devices control current, voltage, and signal. They are manufactured on wafers through processes such as photolithography, diffusion or ion implantation, deposition, and metallization, followed by packaging for protection and electrical connections.

Semiconductor components are foundational to modern electronics, enabling computation, communication, sensing, and power management. They range from microprocessors and memory chips to sensors, LEDs, and power semiconductors.
