Puolijohdediodi, commonly known as a diode, is an electronic component that conducts electric current primarily in one direction. This property makes it a fundamental building block in electronic circuits. Diodes are typically made from semiconductor materials, most commonly silicon. They consist of two terminals: an anode and a cathode. The anode is the positive terminal, and the cathode is the negative terminal.

The operation of a diode relies on the properties of a p-n junction, which is formed by joining a p-type semiconductor material with an n-type semiconductor material. In p-type material, there are an excess of "holes" (electron vacancies), while in n-type material, there are an excess of free electrons. When these two materials are brought together, a depletion region forms at the junction, where free electrons and holes combine, leaving behind immobile charged ions.

When a voltage is applied across the diode such that the anode is positive with respect to the cathode (forward bias), the depletion region narrows, allowing current to flow. Conversely, when the anode is negative with respect to the cathode (reverse bias), the depletion region widens, and very little current can flow. This unidirectional current flow is the defining characteristic of a diode.

Diodes have a wide range of applications, including rectification (converting alternating current to direct current), signal demodulation, voltage regulation, and switching. Different types of diodes exist for specific purposes, such as Zener diodes for voltage stabilization, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for illumination, and photodiodes for light detection. The development and understanding of semiconductor diodes have been crucial for the advancement of modern electronics.
