Pumppüssid, also known as pump-action shotguns, are a type of firearm that utilizes a sliding forearm mechanism to cycle the action. This mechanism, often referred to as "pumping," ejects a spent shell and loads a new one into the chamber. This allows for rapid firing of multiple shots as long as the shooter has ammunition.

The design of the pump-action shotgun dates back to the late 19th century. Its primary advantage lies in its reliability and simplicity of operation. The pumping action is mechanically robust, making it less prone to jamming compared to some other semi-automatic designs. This reliability, coupled with its ability to fire a variety of ammunition types, has made it a popular choice for hunting, sport shooting, and law enforcement.

A typical pumppüss consists of a barrel, a receiver, a stock, and the characteristic sliding forearm. Ammunition is usually fed from a tubular magazine located beneath the barrel. When the forearm is pulled backward, it retracts the bolt, extracts and ejects the spent cartridge, and cocks the hammer. When the forearm is pushed forward, it strips a new cartridge from the magazine, chambers it, and closes the bolt, preparing the firearm to be fired again.

While effective, the manual nature of the pumping action means that the rate of fire is limited by the shooter's speed and coordination. Nevertheless, the pumppüss remains a widely used and respected firearm in many applications due to its enduring practicality and proven performance.
