pulsione

Pulsione is a term originating from psychoanalytic theory, often translated from the German word "Trieb". It refers to an instinctual, innate drive or urge that motivates behavior. Unlike a simple reflex, a pulsione is considered to be a complex, internally generated force that seeks expression and discharge.

Freud's concept of pulsione was multifaceted, distinguishing between different types of drives. Initially, he posited a pulsione of self-preservation and a pulsione of pleasure. Later, he developed the dualistic model of pulsione, distinguishing between life pulsiones (Eros), which encompass survival, reproduction, and pleasure, and death pulsiones (Thanatos), which represent aggression and a drive towards destruction or a return to an inorganic state.

Pulsiones are characterized by several key features: a source of excitation within the body, an aim to satisfy the drive, an object that can fulfill the aim, and a force or intensity that propels the individual towards action. These drives are not always conscious and can exert a powerful influence on thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, even when individuals are unaware of their existence. The concept of pulsione has been central to understanding human motivation, conflict, and psychopathology within psychoanalytic frameworks.
