A pulsioksimeeter, or pulse oximeter, is a non-invasive medical device used to measure a person's blood oxygen saturation level and pulse rate. It typically clips onto a fingertip, earlobe, or toe. The device works by emitting two beams of light, one red and one infrared, through the tissue. Hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen, absorbs these different wavelengths of light depending on whether it is oxygenated or deoxygenated. The pulsioksimeeter then calculates the ratio of oxygenated hemoglobin to total hemoglobin, which represents the blood oxygen saturation level, commonly expressed as SpO2.

This measurement is crucial for assessing respiratory function and detecting potential issues such as hypoxemia, a condition where there is insufficient oxygen in the blood.
