Pulsdauern is a term used to describe the length of time a pulse remains above a defined reference level, or the duration of a pulse in a pulsed signal. It is a central parameter in electronics, optics, acoustics and related fields.

In practice, pulse duration is defined in several ways. The most common is the full width at half maximum (FWHM), which is the interval during which the signal amplitude is at least half of its peak value. Other conventions specify 10% to 90% thresholds, or thresholds defined by the specific application. The unit is seconds, with commonly used subunits such as nanoseconds, picoseconds or femtoseconds in high-speed systems.

Measurement requires time-resolved techniques. Oscilloscopes, high-speed photodetectors, streak cameras, or fast sampling receivers are used to capture the pulse shape. The measured duration depends on the measurement setup, including detector bandwidth and trigger accuracy, and may differ from the intrinsic pulse duration of the source.

There is a fundamental relationship between pulse duration and spectral content: shorter pulses generally require broader bandwidths. This time–bandwidth trade-off influences laser design, pulse shaping, and system performance in communications and spectroscopy.

Applications of controlled pulse durations include pulsed lasers for materials processing, optical communications, time-resolved spectroscopy, radar and LIDAR, and various medical devices. Precise control of pulse duration enables specific energy delivery, resolution, and interaction with matter.

There is no universal single definition of pulsdauern across all disciplines; practitioners select conventions that best suit their field, enabling consistent communication within a given context.
