The genus name is derived from Latin pulpa, meaning pulp, alluding to its edible fruit flesh. In the imagined taxonomy, Pulppia belongs to the family Pulppitaceae (fictional). The genus currently contains three described species: Pulppia alba, Pulppia rubra, and Pulppia nigra.

Morphology and ecology: Pulppia species are evergreen shrubs or small trees reaching 2–4 meters. Leaves are simple and opposite; flowers are bisexual, with a pale corolla and a contrasting central ring. The fruit is a juicy drupe with a pulpy endocarp, hence the common name "pulps."
