Puhtaanääniaudiometria, also known as pure-tone audiometry, is a fundamental audiological test used to measure an individual's hearing threshold at different frequencies. This objective measurement helps determine the softest sound a person can hear at various pitches, ranging from low bass sounds to high treble sounds. The test is typically conducted in a sound-treated booth to eliminate external noise interference.

During the procedure, the individual wears headphones. A series of pure tones, each at a specific frequency, are presented at varying intensities. The patient is instructed to signal whenever they hear a sound, usually by raising a hand or pressing a button. The audiologist then identifies the lowest intensity level at which the sound is audible for a specified number of times. This process is repeated for each frequency tested.

The results of puhtaanääniaudiometria are plotted on an audiogram, a graph that visually represents the hearing levels. The x-axis indicates the frequency in Hertz (Hz), and the y-axis represents the intensity in decibels (dB HL), with lower numbers indicating softer sounds.
